Spitalfields Market

About Spitalfields Market

Spitalfields is an Old fruit and vegetables market. Situated opposite Liverpool St Station on Bishopsgate, Spitalsfield has been transformed quite a bit over the past few years and now it had changed into a slightly boho weekend market which for some reason its own opera house for some time too.

Spitalfields is definitely at its best on Sunday. For sightseers and tourists a good starting point is to start exploring the Hugenot architecture and history of Brick lane and the surrounding area. Also it is always a good idea to go have brunch at nearby Columbia Road Flower Market first.

You can find an absolute cornucopia of stuff here. Organic vegetables, art, books, ethnic impedimentia, vintage cars, you name it. You can find a whole rag tag of merchants. Many leading contemporary artists and sculptors have their studios there. In fact before it became a tourist trap, this is what Covent Garden was like. Though the developers allied to the local council do want to change the place and turn it into another tourist trap just like Covent Garden. This is a shame because there are so many wonderful little places here. Especially recommended  as A good place for Sunday lunch is 'Meson Los Barilles'. It is a Spanish restaurant that has quadrupled in size over the past five years and it's still always packed.
